The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (NAHIT) is leading an important effort for the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) to develop consensus-based definitions for key health information technology terms.
The first step in standardizing health information technology terms is to identify and categorize all known definitions. NAHIT is conducting a literature and organizational search for definitions and concurrently asking organizations -- providers, healthcare IT product innovators, developers/vendors, payers, employers, consumer advocacy organizations, system integrators, academic centers, government, professional organizations and associations -- to submit definitions. NAHIT’s approach is to sort through the similarities and differences in the definitions, look for concept and language commonalities and to do an attribute comparison. The research, analysis, and open assessment will establish a basic definition for all to use and a definition in a context that makes it practical and relevant for a variety of uses.
